Is there a role for tiltrotor reconnaissance drones on corvettes, frigates, and destroyers?
Short answerPossibly, but simpler rotary or catapult-launched drones may offer better value.
NotesThe panel expects experimentation because tiltrotors are attractive technology. The harder question is whether their range and recovery advantages justify extra weight, maintenance, and mechanical complexity aboard an escort. Light reconnaissance drones may achieve the mission with ordinary rotors or with catapult launch and net recovery. If the aircraft is cheap enough to be semi-expendable, the case for an elaborate tiltrotor mechanism becomes weaker still.
