Tiger and Renown expose the price of speed

A direct Tiger-Renown comparison shows how Fisher's demand for speed traded away displacement, subdivision, and armour coverage.

Notes

Tiger was about 90 feet shorter than Renown yet displaced roughly 2,000 tons more. Renown gained about two knots and carried six 15-inch guns, while Tiger mounted eight 13.5-inch guns and devoted more weight to subdivision and armour coverage. Fisher's demand for speed explains why d'Eyncourt's protection preferences were subordinated in the later design. A fully armoured battlecruiser could resist an initial hit like a fast battleship, but lighter internal subdivision left it more vulnerable to repeated damage.
