The Slot was the constrained route used by the Tokyo Express and American convoys. Rather than manoeuvring in the open Pacific, ships were drawn into a tightly bounded area around Guadalcanal. That geography helps explain the repeated, hazardous night actions in Ironbottom Sound. The effect resembled choosing close urban warfare despite having a much larger field in which to manoeuvre.
