Ushakov's squadron arrived in November 1798 and was gradually reinforced by Ottoman and Russian ships and troops. Généreux escaped in January, but by February the coalition had assembled overwhelming numbers for an assault. On 28 February 1799 about two thousand allied troops landed on Vido and overcame its reinforced garrison after roughly two hours. Of roughly 800 defenders, about 200 were killed, 400 captured, and around 150 escaped by swimming to Corfu, while Russian and Ottoman forces suffered about 310 killed or wounded. The capture let coalition batteries and warships concentrate fire on Corfu while allied troops stormed the outlying San Rocco works. With the main fortresses next in line, French envoys sought an armistice and surrendered on 3 March.
