What is the difference between national waters and an exclusive economic zone?
Short answerTerritorial waters are under direct national control; an EEZ grants rights over resource exploitation and administration rather than the same full sovereignty.
NotesTerritorial waters extend roughly twelve nautical miles, while an exclusive economic zone reaches much farther. A state's law applies directly in territorial waters. An EEZ grants economic and administrative rights over resources without equivalent sovereignty over all activity. British overseas territories therefore greatly expand the map of resources and responsibilities that the United Kingdom may be asked to protect. Possible future extensions from two hundred to four hundred miles would alter remaining high-seas space and maritime claims still further.
