HMS Terrible was a Slade-designed 74 built at Harwich, part of a design lineage that included Bellona, Arrogant, Canada, Albion, and related classes. Thomas Slade's designs appeared in repeated batches, with ships ordered even after his death. Terrible fought at Ushant, Cape St Vincent, and Chesapeake. Her loss in 1781 is described as burning or scuttling to prevent capture, with the precise circumstances left disputed. Several of her captains later became admirals, so the ship also carried command experience across campaigns.
