Trading a hill position for room to manoeuvre

Rather than accept a position below a hill and face a downhill attack, the force moves to ground with room to manoeuvre and lets the enemy approach.

Notes

A position below a hill would let the enemy charge downhill into the Roman force. The army instead moves to ground with enough space to manoeuvre and waits for the opponent to approach. The choice shows why high ground cannot be judged in isolation. Mobility can be more useful than occupying awkward terrain below a stronger slope.
