A fleet's fighting edge needs a logistical body

National strategy, geography, industrial capacity, and political priorities determined how far each navy could use its combat power.

Notes

Governments could more easily sell an impressive warship than the supporting vessels and infrastructure that made it usable. The teeth-and-tail analogy makes the constraint concrete: combat power cannot operate far from home without a much larger support structure behind it. A regional force can work with a shorter body. A navy claiming global reach must sustain its teeth from the home economy across the whole distance to the theatre. The comparison therefore turns on each 1939 navy's strategic ambitions, regional circumstances, industrial resources, and preparation time.
