Why Taranto did not produce Cunningham's decisive surface battle

Taranto's damage discouraged an Italian sortie while leaving ships available after repair, frustrating the hope for a decisive follow-up battle.

Notes

Taranto damaged the Italian battle fleet without permanently eliminating it. Cunningham had concentrated a large capital-ship force and hoped the Italians would come out to attack the carrier or answer British incursions. Their losses instead discouraged a sortie, denying him the night or early-morning surface battle he wanted. The damaged ships were not all permanently lost, so Italy retained a fleet that could recover. A second carrier in the strike might have inflicted enough additional damage to leave Italy with far fewer capital ships for the rest of the war.
