Why Pearl Harbor was not attacked at night

Japanese planners could not rely on the night carrier-aviation capability the Fleet Air Arm brought to Taranto.

Question

Did Japan consider attacking Pearl Harbor at night?

Short answer

They would have liked to, but lacked the naval-aviation capability required for that night operation.

Notes

Japanese planners would have valued the advantages of a night attack on Pearl Harbor, but their naval aviation lacked the facilities and operational capability to carry it out. The Fleet Air Arm had invested heavily in long-range night navigation and attack. Darkness at Taranto was therefore a trained advantage rather than convenient concealment alone. The timing reflected what each carrier force could reliably do.
