Taranto’s result could redistribute the battle fleet

A weakened Italian fleet could change British battleship redeployment, the Bismarck chase, convoy operations, and the Battle of Crete.

Notes

If Taranto left Italy with only one effective battleship, older British ships could contain it without keeping several modernized Queen Elizabeth-class battleships in the Mediterranean. Warspite, Valiant, or another major unit might then be available in home waters when Bismarck broke into the Atlantic. Rough seas could reduce the practical speed advantage separating Bismarck from slower pursuers, creating a very different interception battle. A crippled Regia Marina would also alter convoy protection, Axis amphibious support, and the balance around Crete. The initial change matters because it modifies a chain of later force-allocation decisions.
