A successful strike could have delayed Okinawa

One estimate gives a fully successful strike enough effect to delay Okinawa for months, while leaving Japan unable to win the war.

Notes

Tan No. 2 took place shortly before the Okinawa campaign, when British naval forces were becoming a larger presence in the Pacific. A fully successful attack is estimated here to have delayed Okinawa by six or eight months, perhaps as long as a year. That would have bought Japan time and potentially prolonged the war. The estimate still gives Japan no route to victory.
