Chapter ยท 1:10:16-1:11:16

A tactical victory without a durable alliance

Lepanto proved that the allies could defeat Ottoman sea power together, but it did not create the framework for sustained cooperation.

Notes

The Ottoman Empire could draw on substantial infrastructure and industry whenever it invested seriously in a fleet. Its opponents possessed formidable collective strength when they assembled and cooperated. Lepanto demonstrated that the Holy League could meet the Ottoman Navy on those terms and win. The coalition did not last long enough to turn that proof into a decade of coordinated strategy. The closing question asks how a durable league might have changed the Mediterranean balance without claiming that Lepanto settled it by itself.
