Gnevny and Kirov show Soviet design talent under pressure

Soviet destroyers and Kirov-class cruisers demonstrate real design talent, even as purges and uneven industry undermine execution.

Notes

The Soviet Union had capable naval architects: the Gnevny-class destroyers and Kirov-class cruisers show what supported designers could produce. Six Kirov-class cruisers with 7.1-inch (180 mm) guns entered service between 1938 and 1944 and were the largest ships commissioned by the Soviet Union during the war. Naval officers' foreign travel and contact with other fleets made them especially suspect under Stalin. Killing admirals and shipyard leaders disrupted the work of building larger ships. Soviet capital-ship thinking combined Russian design experience with Italian and German influences, while cold operating areas encouraged arrangements suited to northern waters.
