France and Italy gain earlier battleships and competing carriers

Italy can modernize old battleships and start Littorio-type construction sooner, while France may build a larger fast Dunkerque alternative and real carrier force.

Notes

Italian yard capacity still limits simultaneous work. Modernizing the Conte di Cavour and Andrea Doria classes would prepare the infrastructure for earlier Littorio-type construction. More battleships may displace light-cruiser work unless Italy expands its yards. The estimate allows for eight to ten Italian battleships by the historical outbreak of war, if war still begins then. France could pursue a Dunkerque alternative based on an enlarged Suffren layout, with twelve 12-inch guns, about 33 knots, and roughly 36,000 tons total displacement. Building an initial pair could support a further improved pair and modern carriers before the war. Once France launches a credible carrier, Mussolini's competitive politics make an Italian response likely.
