Sydney Dacres consolidates the ironclad revolution

See why technological leadership sometimes means integrating proven changes instead of continually restarting the fleet's direction.

Notes

Dacres rose through hospital, victualling, fleet-staff, Mediterranean, and Channel Squadron appointments before entering the Admiralty. His experience integrating ironclads helped him support mastless turret ships such as the Devastation class while pressing for better officer education and more attention to junior views. Rather than chasing every innovation, he provided a period of consolidation in which the Navy could absorb new machinery and operating practices before committing to another generation. That pause can be understood as a leadership decision: experience with one generation had to mature before procurement moved to the next.
