Chapter ยท 18:18-19:27

Sydney Bailey coordinated British-American naval assistance

Bailey was recalled for diplomacy and multinational coordination as Britain assessed naval assistance from the United States.

Notes

Sydney Bailey chaired the committee examining naval aid that Britain might seek from the United States and worked closely with Robert L. Ghormley. They dealt with practical questions surrounding American naval assistance to Britain throughout the war. Bailey was recalled for diplomacy and British-American coordination rather than sea command. He died in 1942, reportedly after delaying treatment so that he could keep working. His case also records the physical cost of sustained wartime service at senior level.
