A Swordfish could detect a submarine or periscope with surface-search radar, attack with depth charges, and fire rockets at a surfaced hull. Even limited damage to pressure-hull or diving systems could trap the submarine on the surface, where escorts could finish the engagement. Saddle-tank designs left some pressure-hull areas close enough to the outer hull for relatively small weapons to have serious effects. Once a damaged boat could not turn or submerge quickly, a surface escort could choose a safer gun-attack angle.
