Why the Swordfish remained useful at night

The Swordfish should not be dismissed as obsolete when its night-strike role, experienced crews, and available numbers made it effective in the right conditions.

Notes

Operation Winded provides the setting for a defence of the Fairey Swordfish's wartime usefulness. Swordfish from Campania and Nairana attacked shipping by moonlight with rockets and bombs during the Home Fleet carriers' first night anti-shipping strike. Calling the aircraft a First World War relic misses the role it could still perform with experienced crews and enough airframes available for the mission. The damage claims remained uncertain, but the aircraft was still suited to the task. Combat usefulness depends on mission, conditions, personnel, and force availability alongside technical modernity.
