Sweden's Oden class and a recurring coastal-warship form

The Oden class illustrates the compact dimensions and heavy armament that repeatedly emerged for late nineteenth-century coastal defence.

Notes

Sweden's Oden class returned to a familiar package: roughly 85 meters long, about 15 meters in beam, 16.5 knots, two 10-inch guns, a secondary battery, and a thick belt. The repeated dimensions across navies reflect local dockyard capacity and the practical size of a ship meant to defeat cruisers without becoming a battleship. Compact Scandinavian coastlines and harbors also contrast with South America's long coasts, where speed and range eventually made full battleships more useful.
