Was Swan Hunter barred from building Royal Navy ships, and what happened to its yard equipment?
Short answerNo. Bankruptcy and scarce orders ended ship construction; much of the yard's machinery was sold, moved to India, and rebuilt for Bharati Shipyards.
NotesSwan Hunter was not barred from Royal Navy work. Bankruptcy and a lack of orders ended ship construction at the yard. In 2007, cranes, a floating dock, and other plant and machinery were sold to Bharati Shipyards, dismantled, shipped to India, and rebuilt there over about six months. The equipment remained useful after it left the Tyne and strengthened another shipbuilding centre. Swan Hunter continued on a much smaller scale as a ship-design, engineering-design, and project-management business serving maritime, offshore-renewables, oil, and gas work. The company name survived after the Tyne lost much of the physical shipbuilding capacity associated with it.
