Dmitri Pozharsky spent roughly eight months on Indian Ocean duty while tracking USS Constellation's carrier group and visiting ports including Madras, Mogadishu, Aden, and Port Louis. The cruiser's size and speed let her remain close enough to gather information while creating an operational problem that could not simply be pushed aside. At Port Louis, her crew assisted people affected by a tropical cyclone, adding a cooperative diplomatic purpose to the same distant-deployment capability. A later cadet cruise around Japan and through the Korea and Kuril straits continued the ship's training role. The same hull therefore supported surveillance, relationship-building, humanitarian relief, and fleet education.
