Africa Shell's survivors complicate British intelligence

The released crew identified their attacker as Admiral Scheer, adding uncertainty over which Deutschland-class raider was operating in the Indian Ocean.

Notes

Africa Shell's crew reached shore and reported that Admiral Scheer had sunk their ship. British officers knew that a German Panzerschiff was present but could not confidently distinguish Graf Spee, Scheer, or Deutschland. That mattered because each ship had a different commander, and British intelligence assessed their likely behavior differently. Even a prompt survivor report could therefore leave an operationally important identification problem unresolved.
