Chapter · 20:16-25:50

Survivability, speed, and the lost nuclear escort concept

The original carrier concept paired damage tolerance and sustained high speed with nuclear cruisers that could escort a rapid transfer between oceans.

Notes

Facing Soviet bombers, submarines, and massed missile attack, the designers wanted a carrier able to absorb punishment and continue operating. Nuclear propulsion provided sustained speed for both aircraft operations and theater-to-theater movement. California-class nuclear cruisers were meant to preserve escort protection during a maximum-speed transfer, while layered defense ensured that the air wing was not the carrier’s only shield. Replenishment at sea could sustain a rapid shift between oceans and let the fleet reinforce a theater faster than an opponent expected. The cruisers’ later retirement narrowed the carrier’s practical strategic mobility to the endurance of conventional escorts.
