Why reaching port could mission-kill a surface raider

Graf Spee's confinement at Montevideo shows how locating and containing a raider could end its campaign before the pursuing force fired the final shot.

Notes

Admiral Graf Spee's entry into port amounted to a mission kill because the Allies then knew exactly where the raider was. British forces converging on the area no longer had to search the South Atlantic for an elusive opponent. The raider also lost the freedom to attack shipping while diplomatic and military pressure accumulated outside the harbour. This is a compact lesson in how intelligence, containment, and force concentration can defeat commerce raiding without requiring an immediate fleet action.
