A maritime patrol aircraft can begin prosecution and then call nearby helicopters, towed-array frigates, or an attack submarine into the hunt. Adding a friendly SSN creates an identification problem because hunters might mistake it for the hostile contact. The noise of the friendly boat's fast transit can also reveal its approach and disadvantage it against an enemy already lying quiet. Submarine-on-submarine prosecution is therefore available, but it carries more coordination and tactical risk than simply adding another airborne sensor.
