Could Surcouf's heavy-gun turret rotate, and how usable was it in combat?
Short answerIt could rotate, but long preparation, strict motion limits, weak fire-control height, and only fourteen rounds per gun made it dangerously impractical.
NotesSurcouf's turret could rotate, but the mechanical fact of traverse concealed the operational problem. The interval from the order to surface to the first shot was about three minutes and thirty-five seconds, and changing the turret from its waterproof condition added more delay. Fire was restricted by the submarine's pitch and roll, while the low rangefinder limited practical range and the magazine carried only twenty-eight heavy shells in total. A destroyer or sloop could fire dozens of rounds during that delay, making even a surfacing manoeuvre already aligned with the target perilous.
