The guns cannot deliver their theoretical value without the systems needed to aim, operate, and protect the ship. The test design adds electrical or electro-hydraulic turret machinery, high-quality rangefinders, sonar for detecting incoming torpedoes, radio direction finding, and radar. Those additions drive the ship to roughly 70,000 tons before every desired feature is included. Attempts to recover weight by changing beam, draft, machinery, or internal arrangements show that turret selection creates a whole-ship compromise rather than an isolated armament calculation.

The systems needed to make a huge battery useful
An enormous main battery also demands advanced controls, sensors, propulsion, and protection, intensifying the displacement problem.
