Super-heavy frigates before the War of 1812

Swedish, French, and British 24-pounder frigates place the famous American heavy frigates inside a wider pre-1812 design competition.

Notes

American super-heavy frigates were formidable without being wholly unprecedented. Sweden's Bellona class sought ships able to support a battle line in coastal waters, while France and Britain also built or converted 24-pounder frigates before the War of 1812. The United States adopted the idea as a capital-ship solution for a smaller navy. American successes against lighter British station frigates therefore belonged to an existing heavy-frigate design contest and also depended on skilled crews and well-built ships.
