How Sunderland guns covered several different tasks

Turret, waist, and fixed forward guns explain the Sunderland's unusually heavy defensive armament.

Notes

The armament discussion recalls a four-gun tail turret, twin forward and dorsal positions, and possible twin waist guns. Up to four fixed guns under the pilot's control could suppress U-boat anti-aircraft crews during an attack. Crews also fitted additional weapons in openings such as doorways. A recollection of one Sunderland carrying thirty machine guns is explicitly uncertain and is not established as a reliable maximum.
