The ships displaced roughly 10,000 long tons standard and used six oil-fired boilers, two small coal-fired cruising boilers on early members, and three geared turbine sets. At 15 knots Suffren could make about 4,600 nautical miles with both oil and coal aboard, while the cruising boilers alone offered about 2,000 nautical miles at 11 knots. Those figures varied sharply with speed, tying machinery choices to operational reach. The outfit included eight eight-inch guns, 550 mm torpedoes, light protection, and two catapult aircraft. French chevaux figures require conversion before they can be compared with shaft-horsepower values in other sources.
