Why carriers mattered at Suez

Carrier aviation offered the ability to sustain air attacks and close support nearer to the battlefield than land bases could manage.

Notes

Carriers could operate closer to the fighting than the available land bases. That proximity allowed naval aircraft to maintain a denser sequence of air attacks. It also helped sustain support for troops ashore. The value of naval aviation at Suez depended in part on where its mobile airfields could be positioned.
