The Baghdad Pact delivered more than a treaty

The Baghdad Pact built railway and scientific links, showing how practical regional cooperation could be weakened by competing Western political agendas.

Notes

The 1955 Baghdad Pact later became METO and CENTO. Britain sponsored it, with Iraq at its centre. It produced railway construction and scientific links, which made it more than a paper alliance. In this account, American pressure to reduce Britain's Middle Eastern role weakened a functioning regional framework and produced no stronger replacement. The example connects regional infrastructure with alliance politics and imperial retrenchment around Suez.
