Submarine rescue becomes an improvised raft evacuation

A rope-and-rescue-boat plan fails under Japanese air attack, forcing the remaining Raiders to lash rubber boats and native canoes into a powered raft.

Notes

The submarines sent a rescue boat to rig a line that could pull the remaining craft through the surf. Japanese aircraft sank the boat and forced the submarines to crash-dive. Carlson's party then lashed three rubber boats to two native canoes and powered the raft with the two surviving outboards. The improvised craft carried 72 exhausted Raiders to the lagoon entrance for pickup.
