Louis XIV tries to separate the Dutch from their allies

After the settlement, Louis XIV sought to isolate the Dutch by paying Britain to stay out and encouraging Swedish commitments elsewhere.

Notes

Louis XIV blamed the Dutch for the settlement that limited his gains in the Spanish Netherlands. Renewed expansion required him to manage the other powers that had helped restrain France. Payments offered a way to keep Britain out of the fighting. Encouraging Swedish ambitions elsewhere could likewise divert a dangerous opponent. The strategy sought to leave the Dutch exposed by giving their partners reasons to look away.
