Why Dutch command titles resist modern rank equivalents

Admiralty-specific titles and the presence of flag captains complicate attempts to assign modern ranks to the Dutch squadron commanders.

Notes

Seventeenth-century Dutch command titles do not map neatly onto modern naval ranks. The relevant admiralty could affect the title and its place in the hierarchy. One squadron commander is therefore treated provisionally as closer to a commodore than a rear admiral. The distinction rests partly on the understanding that the other two commanders had flag captains while he did not. That evidence supports a working comparison without establishing an exact modern equivalent.
