Were the campaign's errors mainly tactical or strategic?
Short answerMostly strategic: the Allies failed to bring naval and land power together at the first, weakest moment.
NotesTactical mistakes mattered, but the initial force design and timing mattered more. Naval gunfire could destroy defenses but could not occupy them; soldiers could hold ground but required fire support to reach it. A February assault that secured even part of the straits would have created a foothold for the fleet's next advance. The later tactical problem was compounded because every pause allowed the Ottomans to reinforce the strategic position the Allies had failed to seize early.
