Steam changed more than propulsion

Experimental squadrons had to work out the logistical, personnel, and tactical consequences of adding steam to sailing fleets.

Notes

French and British experimental squadrons tested how mixed sail-and-steam fleets would work before wartime demanded settled answers. Steam power forced navies to reconsider coal support, the specialists required aboard ship, and the tactics of squadrons that now had different ways to move. Rival navies were learning at the same time, so an advantage depended on fitting technology, organisation, and support together. The individual ship examples belong to this broader institutional transition.
