Stargate's nearly exclusive Air Force personnel structure fits small craft better than large spacecraft. Pilots can come from an air force, but operating a large vessel requires engine-room expertise and round-the-clock watches. Maintenance, embarked personnel, and supply also resemble naval service more closely than a fighter squadron. Adding Marines does not supply the shipboard engineering and watchkeeping structure needed to keep the vessel running.
