Stanley Orr and the Fulmar's Mediterranean combat record

Stanley Orr's Fulmar victories from Illustrious, Malta, and Formidable show how the aircraft could succeed against the bomber-heavy threats it was assigned to stop.

Notes

Stanley Orr moved from Skuas and Rocs into Fulmars with 806 Naval Air Squadron, flew cover during Operation Dynamo, and later joined HMS Illustrious. He claimed seven of the thirty aircraft shot down during Illustrious's Mediterranean deployment. The Italian force lacked enough of its best fighters, but the plentiful bombers were precisely the targets Fulmars were meant to stop. After Illustrious was damaged, the squadron defended Malta and then transferred to HMS Formidable. Orr eventually reached seventeen air-to-air victories and became the Royal Navy's highest-scoring ace of the war.
