StanFlex was built for a smaller navy and did not initially offer every capability the United States would want, but that made it a starting point rather than a disqualification. The proposed alternative has the U.S. Navy buying into Danish development and expanding a proven modular baseline instead of beginning with a wholly new American system. Denmark's ability to insist that contracted equipment actually work would provide an external check on supplier behavior. The partnership might have produced a frigate related to the Iver Huitfeldt family and, by extension, the British Type 31 approach. Such a ship would not perfectly match every original LCS mission, but American officers could still make practical use of a sizeable fleet of them.
