Standardized turrets turn ships into a fleet

Common 8-inch and 12-inch turret systems simplified training, crew transfers, maintenance, and ammunition support across different Japanese designs.

Notes

Japan accepted ships from different designers while standardizing the working systems that crews depended upon. Eight-inch-gun cruisers shared turret arrangements, just as the twelve-inch-gun battleships did within their own group. Common mechanisms let officers and ratings move between hulls with familiar procedures and reduced the variety of spares, training, and support required. Maintenance and ammunition supply also became easier to organize across the fleet. This institutional standardization helped the Six-Six Fleet perform as a coherent force at Tsushima in 1905.
