Reading a Soviet-era Stalin biography critically

Dmitri Volkogonov's access to Soviet archives makes his Stalin biography unusually valuable, but its late-Soviet origins still require careful reading.

Notes

Dmitri Volkogonov's Stalin is recommended because the author combined personal experience of the Soviet system with unusual access to state archives. Future Russian biographers may not receive the same access under a more restrictive political climate. The book nevertheless emerged from within the late Soviet era, so its framing and limitations should remain visible to the reader. Its archival opportunity and political setting both shape how the biography should be read.
