Spruance and Type 42 solve different escort problems

A comparison with the contemporary Type 42 separates area air defense from the Spruance class's larger helicopter, ASW, anti-surface, screening, and presence contribution.

Notes

Spruance and the Royal Navy's Type 42 entered service in the same broad period but emphasized different escort functions. The Type 42's Sea Dart system gave it an area-air-defense role that the Spruance class's Sea Sparrow battery could not match. Spruance carried two substantial helicopters and a towed array for ASW, alongside anti-surface weapons and task-group screening capability. The American class also contributed presence and numbers to the fleet. It complemented the US Navy's cruisers, including the nuclear-powered cruisers then entering service.
