Earlier Cold War destroyers tended to be either air-defense or ASW specialists with a strong secondary role. Spruance began from an ASW emphasis but added anti-surface warfare and, after Tomahawk fitting, a land-attack mission. This broader capability marked a move toward multi-role destroyers. That change is also offered as a reason why Ticonderoga's reclassification as a cruiser became easier.
