The Spica class can be understood as torpedo gunboats because the roughly thousand-ton hull combined 100 mm guns, anti-aircraft weapons, four 18-inch torpedoes, and mines. Their speed and mixed armament made them capable opponents for smaller torpedo craft and useful escorts for Italian shipping. A larger Royal Navy destroyer generally had more guns, torpedoes, fire-control capacity, and crew, so the Spicas were unlikely to win a fair fight against one. That mismatch did not make the design unsuccessful. Convoy protection was their essential wartime task, and the Regia Marina needed numerous ships of this type to keep its Mediterranean supply routes operating.

Spica-class boats in the convoy war
Italy's compact Spica-class torpedo boats were outmatched by destroyers but still vital to Regia Marina escort work.
