Why three extra knots did not decide the cruiser fight

The faster Japanese cruisers cannot exploit speed without staying inside gun range, while the British all-forward layout keeps more barrels bearing during pursuit.

Notes

The result differs from a battlecruiser test where speed and heavier guns were decisive. Here both sides carry 8-inch weapons, so the geometry of the engagement matters more: the faster ships maneuver to manage range, while the pursuing British ships can fire all three forward turrets. The Japanese cruisers repeatedly restrict their own firing arcs while trying to preserve distance. The simulation suggests that speed needs a tactical mechanism to translate into victory.
