Could von Spee have donated Scharnhorst and Gneisenau to the Ottoman Empire?
Short answerIt was impractical because the ships would have to pass allied-controlled Singapore and would likely meet the faster, more heavily armed HMAS Australia.
NotesAn Ottoman transfer would still have required the ships to cross waters where Britain could intercept them. Britain could have directed them into Singapore and impounded them. HMAS Australia offered the means to enforce that demand, with 12-inch guns and greater speed than the German armoured cruisers. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau's 22 knots and 8.3-inch guns left them poorly placed to force their way through.
