Equipment debates need battlefield context and force ratios

Pom-pom and tank comparisons show why military equipment should be judged in the force ratios and missions in which it actually fought.

Notes

The pom-pom argument shows how military-history debates can be manufactured by comparing isolated specifications. A weapon's range or accuracy matters, but so do the number of mounts and the volume of fire a force can put into action. The same error appears in one-on-one Tiger-versus-Sherman comparisons when the historical encounter might involve a single Tiger against many Shermans. The useful comparison is the force actually deployed for the mission, not a duel chosen to flatter one design.
