Specialisation versus air-wing commonality

A diverse 1990s air wing complicated enemy planning, while later commonality improved efficiency at the cost of reach and tactical variety.

Notes

Mature Tomcats, Intruders, Prowlers, and other specialists gave commanders different ways to defend and strike over long distances. Their different sensors, weapons, and mission profiles made the 1990s air wing harder for an opponent to predict and counter. A largely single-type combat-aircraft fleet simplifies logistics, training, and force generation, but also makes the available style of attack more predictable. The lost radius imposed war-fighting and deterrence costs beyond any nostalgia for older aircraft. Carrier drones offered one way to restore long-range punch, while land-based tankers and buddy stores remain poor substitutes in peer conflict because they do not give the carrier independent reach.
